CARB
What is a CARB Compliance Certificate
If your trucking company hauls freight to or from California, you need to get a special certificate because of the state’s air quality rules. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) requires all diesel trucks weighing over 14,000 pounds to be registered for clean emissions. This includes trucks that carry goods to and from California’s ports and rail yards. The California DMV began enforcing some rules in 2020, and more started in 2021. To legally transport freight in California, make sure to follow the steps to become CARB compliant.
What does CARB Regulate?
Statewide Emission Standards
CARB mandates that all vehicles operating in California, regardless of where they are registered, meet new emission standards.
Mandatory Compliance
A CARB compliance certificate is required for legal freight transportation within California.
Universal Fleet Requirement
Every vehicle in a fleet must be CARB certified for companies intending to operate within California.
What Vehicles are Subject to the Regulations?
To comply with California’s stringent emission regulations, all trucks weighing over 14,001 pounds must secure a CARB compliance certificate, and as of January 1, 2023, they are required to have engines from the year 2010 or newer. This shift is part of California’s commitment to reducing emissions from older, less efficient engines. Transition periods varied based on the truck’s weight; lighter vehicles had until earlier this year to update their pre-2010 engines, while heavier vehicles should have made the switch by the start of 2022. Now, regardless of weight, all trucks must operate with the updated engines to legally transport freight in California.
