What is IRP?
It is a registration method for fleets traveling in two or more jurisdictions. All states (exceptAlaska and Hawaii) and 10 Canadian provinces participate in the IRP.
Who Needs to Register?
If you qualify for IRP, you must register your fleet in your home or “base” jurisdiction.A fleet can consist of one or more vehicles that pay registration fees across multiple states.
How Does IRP Work?
Your base jurisdictioncollects registration fees and distributes them to other jurisdictionswhere you have registered under the IRP. These fees depend on the type ofoperation (private, for-hire, or rental), percentage of miles traveled in each jurisdiction, and the registered gross weight of eachvehicle. The revenue is proportionally shared among member jurisdictions, with costs varying by state.
