What is a MC number?
The MC Number, also known as the Motor Carrier Number, is a requisite identifier for carriers transporting regulated commodities or passengers across state lines for compensation. Alongside the USDOT Number, it’s essential for legal interstate operation. Additional authorities like “MX” for carriers operating between the U.S. and Mexico and “FF” for freight forwarders may also be required, depending on your service scope and cargo type.
Types of Motor Carrier Authority
Motor Carrier of Property
For-hire carriers transporting non-household goods for payment need to provide proof of public liability insurance. Cargo insurance is not mandatory.
Motor Carrier of Household Goods (Moving Companies)
or-hire carriers specializing in household goods must provide proof of both public liability and cargo insurance for interstate authority.
Motor Passenger Carrier Authority
Carriers that transport passengers for compensation require appropriate authority for interstate travel.
Mexico-based Carrier Authority (MX Number)
Required for Mexico-based carriers intending to operate beyond U.S. municipalities and commercial zones along the U.S.-Mexico border.
