Introduction to Permits
Navigating the complex landscape of state-specific trucking permits can be a daunting task for truckers. New York, Kentucky, New Mexico, and Oregon each require unique permits for commercial vehicles operating within their borders. These permits are essential for legal compliance and smooth operations across state lines. Understanding and obtaining the correct permits is crucial for avoiding delays and penalties, ensuring that your trucking operations run efficiently and in accordance with state regulations.
New Mexico WDT (Weight Distance Tax) Permit
If you operate vehicles in New Mexico with a gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds, you will need a New Mexico WeightDistance Tax (WDT) account. Our team can assist you in opening this account and guide you through the process of filing quarterly reports. Please note that this is in addition to holding an IFTA license. The provisional license’s required 12-month holding period before upgrading to a regular driver’s license is extended by 30 days for each traffic violation conviction or adjudication of delinquency during the provisional period.
Kentucky (KYU) Permits

The Kentucky Weight Distance Tax (KYU) is based on how many miles your truck drives in Kentucky. If your truck weighs over 59,999 pounds and travels through Kentucky, you need to get a Kentucky Weight Distance Permit. You can get a one-time temporary KYU permit or file for the Kentucky Weight Distance Tax by reaching out to DOT Operating Authority. Our experienced filing agents can handle your paperwork quickly, making sure everything is filed on time.

For carriers operating in Kentucky with a combined weight of 60,000 pounds or more, aKentucky KYU (Kentucky Highway Usage) number is required. Our experts can help you open a KYU account and ensure accurate filing of quarterly reports. Although the display of the KYU number on trucks is no longer necessary, it is important to update your inventory list of trucks with Kentucky as it changes. This requirement is in addition to holding an IFTA license.

New York HUT(Highway Use Tax) Permit
When operating motor vehicles weighing over 18,000 pounds on New York highways, carriers are subject to the New York Highway Use Tax (HUT). We can assist you in opening an HUT account and registering each vehicle that travels in New York. Our team will ensure compliance with the HUT regulations, in addition to holding an IFTA license. Usually, the NYHUT sticker is valid for 3 years, though this can vary. The exact duration your stickers are valid for is printed on the decals themselves, so it’s crucial to check them to confirm their validity period.
Oregon Motor Carrier Account
For carriers with a gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds planning to travel through Oregon, an Oregon Motor Carrier Account is required. Oregon imposes a mileage tax known as the Oregon Highway Use Tax, and we can guide you through the process of obtaining an Oregon Weight Receipt and TaxIdentifier receipt.
